Shipping Glossary

Arrival Notice

A notice from the ocean carrier to the 'notify party,' indicating the vessel's estimated arrival date; identifying shipment details such as number of packages, weight, and container number; and indicating when free time expires. Often includes a freight invoice

Arrive Contract

Generic term for ex-ship or ex-quay business transactions. The shipper bears the costs and risks until the goods have arrived at the agreed destination

German abbr. for equipment, repair, telephony: a collective term used for ships' maintenance, provisions, EDP and communications costs; can also be described as ships' maintenance and repair costs

AS Agents

A record in the shipper's line of the B/L by which a forwarder or agent expresses that he is merely carrying out the shipment on behalf of a shipper, i.e. on thirdparty account. However, with regard to the shipowner the forwarding agent continues to act in the capacity of a shipper, and is subject to all the rights and obligations resulting from the contract of carriage. On occassion, the opinion is held that the forwarding agent carries out the shipment by means of this addition in order to limit his liability to the shipper
