BAF

Bunker Adjustment Factor, used to compensate steamship lines for fluctuating fuel costs. Also called FAF, Fuel Adjustment factor

Balloon Freight

Light, bulky articles

Bank Guarantee

Guarantee issued by a bank to a carrier to be used in lieu of lost or misplaced original negotiable bill of lading

Banking

Transition period between low and high tide during which the water level does not change. Duration about 20 minutes

Bar

Sand bank or shallows near a river mouth or in front of/ at a mouth of a harbour

Bar Harbour

A harbour which can only be touched at high tide

Barge Carrier

Special ship for the overseas transport of barges. The barge carrier takes barges aboard either by means of on-board cranes (LASH type) or by lowering the mother ship (dock ship principle)

Barge Carriers

Ships designed to carry barges. Some are fitted to act as full container ships and can carry a varying number of barges and containers at the same time. At present, this class includes two types of vessels, LASH and Sea-Bee
