Base Port

1. Central harbour of a trade or round the world service at which large ships call and where shipment is effected through feeder services to the ports of destination. 2. Term related to the rate policy of Conference shipping: The base port determined by a Conference must also be touched by shippers who must accept or deliver cargo even if they did not intend to touch that port. The additional costs for transport to/from the next base port are borne by the carrier

Tariff rate for cargo shipped between two base ports

Battens

Planks fastened to the walls of holds or containers. They are intended to prevent the cargo from contact with condensation water which might run down the walls. Thus, it is also ensured that air circulates around the cargo

Bay

Line of containers running in cross pole direction which indicates the stowage position of a container. Even numbers refer to 40'-slots and odd numbers to 20'-slots
